As kick-off approaches for the Rugby League World Cup in Wigan Borough, a wide-ranging cultural festival will ensure the excitement is not just on the pitch.
Titled ‘The Power of Together’ the programme includes events, activities and performances staged at various locations during the tournament. The opening coincides with the men’s, women’s and wheelchair World Cup trophies visiting the borough on Friday as part of the official National Lottery Trophies Tour.
A star player in the cultural line-up is the ‘Gerrumonside!’ exhibition at the Museum of Wigan Life, which will host an impressive series of Q&As, talks and discussions in addition to the main exhibition that details the history of rugby league in the borough.
There will also be an amazing variety of family-friendly activities in the borough’s libraries along with writing, poetry and sports journalism masterclasses.
Further highlights in the schedule include a five-week photography exhibition at Wigan Library, a live panel event at Ashton Library chaired by RL author and publisher Phil Caplan, and a talk on women in rugby league with England international and Wigan Warriors captain Rachel Thompson at Archives: Wigan and Leigh.
