Location: Leigh
Description: Following the early pioneers, such as Mrs Graham’ X1 in Scotland and Lady Dixie’s British Ladies’ Football Club in England, a third pioneer of women’s football was the famous Dick, Kerr’s Ladies F.C. The club was formed in 1917 at Preston munitions factory, Dick Kerr & Co Ltd, during the First World War, initially to raise money for the war effort. Their players and matches were treated with more respect than their predecessors, playing to crowds as large as 10,000 people. The match in Leigh was against Corinthians, who went on to take part in a number of national and international tournaments.
