Year: 1921
Location: Victoria Road Ground, Platt Bridge, Wigan
Description: On the 14th of May 1921, one week after the President of the Board of Education announced the extent to which children needed feeding, the wives of miners from Platt Bridge in Wigan organised a ladies’ football match between representatives of Platt Bridge and neighbouring Abram. They met on Victoria Road ground in front of a crowd of 7,000. The proceeds of the game went towards the relief fund for feeding the miners’ children. There was no charge for admission, but a collection raised £16 14s 11/2, which worked out at an average of 1/2d per person.
